Varzob Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Oxfordian-Tithonian (J3), C2a, K1

Province:
Central W Tajik, SW Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It is distinguished by the author (Luchnikov, 1970, 1972). Includes in Dushanbe-east Shirkent-Luchob and Khation Region

Synonym: Varzob suite, варзобской свитами

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

Section from bottom to top: 1-alternation of marls, clayey limestones, sands, dolomites, and clays with individual layers of anhydrites, thickness 85-125 m; 2- uneven interbedding of clayey limestones, marls, clays, dolomites with rare thin layers of anhydrites, thickness 65-95 m. The thickness of the Varzob suite (варзобской свиты) is 170- 220 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is conformably underlain by Suffin Fm

Upper contact

It is overlain conformably by red clays of the Karabil Fm (карабильской свиты) with a thickness of up to 5-30 m.

Regional extent

It is widespread in the Dushanbe district. In the eastern part (to the east of the interfluve of the Shirkent-Luchob) it is represented by the Varzob suite (варзобской свитами). In the interfluve Shirkent--Luchob these several non-coeval suites transition (pairwise) into each other along the strike.

Fossils

In the lower part of the Varzob Fm, remains of Oxfordian pelecypods (det. N. D. Yushina) Protocardia concinnum (Buch.), Parallelodon pictum Milasch., Cuspidaria curvata Rep., Camptonectes singularis Rep., Arcomytilus subpectinatus Orb., Pinna lanceolata Sow., and others, have been found in the suite. In the upper part of this suite, Kimmeridgian bivalves Camptonectes grenieri Contej., C. duabensis Rep., Anomya monsbeliardensis Contej., Astarte sequana Contej., Modiolus subhannoverana Pcel., M. longavus Contej., Plagiostoma ex gr. asfiarina Thurm were discovered.

Age

the lower part of the Varzobskaya Fm is attributed to the Oxfordian; the upper part of it is attributed to the Kimmeridgian. It cannot be ruled out that there might be Tithonian formations in the upper part of the Varzobskaya Fm (варзобской свиты), or that the overlying red clays of the Karabil Fm (карабильской свиты) should be attributed to them, as has been noted.
